Exclusive Interview with Michelle Molinari: The Power of Personal Projects in Building a Strong Art Portfolio

We recently sat down with Michelle Molinari, one of our incredible teachers, to talk about the importance of personal projects in a young artist’s portfolio. Michelle, who teaches a group of talented teenagers every Friday, has a wealth of experience as a professional artist. She actively exhibits her work and knows firsthand how crucial personal expression is in developing a unique artistic voice. And here’s the exciting part—we’re inviting young artists to join her for a free trial class!

Q: Michelle, why do you think personal projects are so important for teenagers working on their art portfolios?

Michelle: Personal projects are the heart and soul of an artist’s portfolio. They allow young artists to dive deep into their own interests, passions, and creative ideas. Unlike structured assignments, these projects give them the freedom to explore whatever sparks their imagination. This is where true creativity happens—when they can express themselves without limitations.

Q: How do personal projects help in building a stronger portfolio?

Michelle: Personal projects showcase more than just technical skill; they reveal the artist’s individuality and unique perspective. This is what universities, art programs, and scholarship committees are looking for. They want to see that the artist has a distinct voice and the ability to think critically and creatively. A well-rounded portfolio with strong personal projects can really make a teenager stand out.

Q: You’re not just a teacher—you’re also a practicing artist who exhibits your work. How does your professional experience influence your teaching?

Michelle: Absolutely! Being an active artist allows me to bring real-world insights into the classroom. I understand the challenges and rewards of creating personal work, and I use my experience to guide my students through their own creative journeys. I encourage them to take risks, explore different mediums, and most importantly, to find their own voice in their art. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them grow and develop their unique styles.

Q: What can students expect in your Friday class?

Michelle: In my Friday class, we focus on both technical skills and personal expression. We work with a variety of mediums—watercolors, oils, pencils, markers—and the students get to experiment and discover what resonates with them. I also make it a point to discuss current art trends and how they can incorporate these ideas into their work. It’s a dynamic, supportive environment where every student’s creative voice is valued.

Q: How can young artists get started with you?

Michelle: We’re offering a free trial class for any young artist who’s interested! It’s a great opportunity to see how we work together, explore new techniques, and start thinking about their own personal projects. Whether they’re just starting out or looking to refine their skills, I’m excited to help them on their artistic journey.

So, parents, if your teen is ready to take their portfolio to the next level, come join us! This is a chance to work with a professional artist, develop a unique creative voice, and build a portfolio that truly stands out.
